US Presently Has no Plans to Attack Afghanistan: Taliban Envoy

The Taliban Ambassador to Pakistan Mulla Abdul Salam Zaeef Saturday said the United States has assured Taliban that presently it has no plans to launch attack on Afghanistan.

Addressing a press conference, Zaeef said he had met with U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan William Milam on Thursday in Islamabad.

"The U.S. Ambassador told me that the United States has not yet found an evidence linking Osama bin Laden with the bombing of the U.S. Navy destroyer in Aden, Yemen. He has stated that so far no decision has been taken with regard to attack on Afghanistan," the Taliban envoy said.

He quoted Milam as saying that the United States would share any evidence involving Osama in this attack with the Taliban government. "Even if they find evidence, it will strengthen the cause of having talks to resolve this issue," he added.

Fears of U.S. attack amounted in Afghanistan after Washington vowed to fight back at those responsible for the destroyer bombing.

The United States launched cruise missiles at alleged terrorist training camps in Afghanistan in 1998 soon after the twin bombing of American embassies in East Africa.

Saeef said the Taliban government is opposed to any kind of act which is meant to harm human beings.

"Our stance has nothing to do with our recognition by the United Nations or international community. It is our principled stance."

He also said that his government would continue its cooperation with the international community on the issues of terrorism, drug trafficking and human rights irrespective of the question of its recognition by them.
