Legislature Awards Journalists Covering Legislation

Journalists covering legislation had their day Friday when the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee held an awards ceremony to recognize their arduous efforts in 1999.

Gold prizes went to 16 journalism works including three Xinhua news stories, of which, Highway Law Amendments Approved earned widespread applause. Another 44 works and 91 works were received silver and bronze prizes respectively.

This is the tenth awarding campaign held by the NPC Standing Committee, China's top legislature.

In addition, 23 amateur reporters from various provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions were rewarded with the title of "excellent correspondent," the first time such prize is presented by the NPC Standing Committee.

Sources from the NPC revealed that since the NPC Standing Committee established a correspondent system across the country in 1998, amateur reporters have provided more than 3,000 news stories to Beijing-based media.
