Hong Kong to Buy 250,000 tons of Thai Rice

Hong Kong has agreed to purchase a total of 250,000 tons of jasmine rice from Thailand next year, Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Supachai Panitchpakdi announced Saturday in Bangkok.

The Thai News Agency quoted Supachai as saying after presiding over the signing ceremony of an agreement on rice trade between Thailand and Hong Kong that the Association of Rice Importers and Exporters of Hong Kong agreed to buy 250,000 tons of jasmine rice next year from the Association of Rice Exporters of Thailand.

This would make Thailand the largest rice exporter in the Hong Kong market next year, gaining 75 percent market share, he said.

Malaysia is currently the largest rice market for Thai exporters in Asia, followed by Hong Kong, he disclosed.

The rice deal would also represent good cooperation between rice exporters in Thailand and importers in Hong Kong and strengthen trade and business ties between the two sides, he pointed out.

Supachai said Thai jasmine rice has been popular among consumers in Hong Kong due to its unique nature and good quality.
