HK to Extend Railway to Over 250 Kilometers by 2016

Hong Kong's railway network will expand from the current 143 kilometers to over 250 kilometers by 2016, with the completion of 12 new railway projects, said Hong Kong's Secretary for Transport, Nicholas Ng, on Friday.

Officiating at the opening ceremony of the "Railway Development Over the Next Two Decades Exhibition", Ng said that over the next 20 years, 200 billion HK dollars (25.6 billion US dollars) would be invested to expand Hong Kong's railway network.

When completed, the railway network would expand to more than 250 kilometers, an increase of over 70 percent over the current length. And by then, about 70 percent of the population and 80 percent of employment would be within walking distance from railway stations, Ng said.

"It is estimated that the rail share in public transport will increase from the present 30 percent to about 45 percent, Ng said.
