CATV Broad-Band Technology Enters Chinese HouseholdsThe first broad-band network service system using TV cable was recently opened in Daqing City, in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province. The system will provide a series of high-speed services, including online stock trading, banking service, video on demand, IP telephone and E-commerce. Liu Xiaowei, president of the Chinese Sunfield Science and Technology Group, said here Friday that successful demonstrations have been made of Daqing's Cable TV (CATV) by using a CMTS system and Sunfield's broad-band network home service system, which has been installed in residents' households. Sector-insiders said that the opening of the broad-band system on CATV represents a breakthrough in the country's broad-band technology and is expected to bring huge economic benefits. China has 80 million cable TV users, and it is estimated that if all users adopt the broad-band technology, that will yield nearly 900 billion yuan (more than 10 billion U.S. dollars). The CATV broad-band network system developed by Sunfield has been awarded China's state-level New Product of 2000, and the central government has given the green light to the promotion of the product nationwide. According to Liu, Huangshan City in east China's Anhui Province will also start using the system soon. |
