Typhoon Hits Philippines, Leaving at Least 11 Dead

Typhoon Bebinca hit the northern Philippines island of Luzon and passed through the capital around dawn, killing at least 11 people, officials said on Friday.

Governor of Laguna Province south of Manila Joey Lina said the 11 dead were part of a group of more than 100 mountaineers in the province.

All schools and offices were closed in Manila as television and radio stations urged people to stay home.

All flights from the capital have been canceled and financial markets were also closed for the day.

Authorities hoisted the storm signal No. 3, the highest level alert, over much of Luzon. In Manila, strong winds and hours of driving rain overnight brought down trees and lampposts and flooded many streets.
