US, DPRK Conclude Talks on Missile Issues in Malaysia

The United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Friday concluded their three-day missile talks here.

The talks were "detailed, constructive and very substantive", Assistant Secretary of State for Nonproliferation Robert J. Einhorn said in a statement issued at the end of the talks which followed the discussions on missile issues held between Secretary of State Albright and DPRK leader Chairman Kim Jong-Il during the former's visit to Pyongyang from October 23 to 24.

However, "significant issues remain to be explored and resolved, " the official said.

The talks here covered the full range of missile issues under consideration by the two countries, including DPRK's missile- related exports and its indigenous missile programs, he said.

The delegations to the talks also explored in depth the idea of exchanging launches of DPRK satellites for serious missile restraint by the DPRK, he said.

The delegations further clarified their respective positions on the full range of missile issues and continued to expand areas of common ground.

The US delegation will now report to authorities in Washington who will consider next steps, he said.

The missile talks which began here Wednesday was the second between the two countries. The two sides had their first talks here in July this year.
