Chilean Court Says Pinochet Must Undergo Mental Tests

A Chilean court ruled Thursday that former leader Augusto Pinochet must undergo psychological and neurological tests to determine whether he could stand trial on charges of human rights abuses.

In September, Chilean Judge Juan Guzman ruled that Pinochet should be questioned and arranged for him to have a mental examination.

Pinochet's lawyers oppose such a solution and claim that Pinochet should have physical tests because psychological tests are not enough to determine whether he can stand trial.

After a three-day hearing, a Santiago Appeals Court rejected the physical tests but agreed to add neurological tests for Pinochet, which may take several weeks.

Pinochet was stripped of his congressional immunity On August 8, paving the way for a trial. Now, he is still in hospital, suffering from what his family said was a bout with pneumonia.
