HK, Beijing Seek Economic Cooperation

The forth annual Beijing-Hong Kong Economic Cooperation Symposium was opened hursday in Hong Kong, offering a platform for government officials, entrepreneurs and scholars to explore new opportunities for economic cooperation between the two places.

The two-day symposium, organized by the Beijing Municipal Government and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, includes a thematic symposium on China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) and new opportunities for cooperation between Hong Kong and Beijing, an economic forum, a forum for entrepreneurs, a photo exhibition and special meetings of introduction.

The Beijing Municipal Government is offering 80 projects for foreign investment, including high-tech, industrial, urban infrastructure, travel, real estate and agricultural projects, involving a total investment of more than 15 billion US dollars.

Liu Qi, Mayor of the Beijing Municipal People's Government, said in his speech at the symposium that during the three years after Hong Kong's return to the motherland, cooperation between Beijing and Hong Kong has experienced a new era of all-around and stable development.

Currently, ventures established in Beijing by Hong Kong entrepreneurs have reached 6,000, with a total investment of 14.8 billion US dollars. Meanwhile, Beijing's investment in Hong Kong is also on a steady rise and Hong Kong has become an important gateway and window for Beijing to the outside world, Liu said.

The mayor believed that China's entry into the WTO will open wide vista for cooperation between Beijing and Hong Kong.

Hong Kong's Financial Secretary Donald Tsang hoped that the two places will further cooperate in scientific research.
