FM Spokesman on UN Resolution on ABM Treaty

China hopes that the Treaty on the Limitation of Anti-Ballistic Missile Systems (ABM Treaty) will be strictly observed and any plan for developing anti-ballistic missile systems should be abandoned as soon as possible.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao made the remarks Thursday at a regular press conference in response to a relevant question.

A resolution was passed Wednesday by the First Committee of the UN, which is in charge of disarmament and international security, calling for concerted efforts to strengthen the ABM Treaty.

Zhu said that the passing of the resolution shows the will and determination of the international community to maintain the global strategic balance and stability.

The passing of the resolution also demonstrates the opposition of the international community to the development and deployment of national missile defense systems that would destroy the global strategic balance, Zhu noted.

Zhu said that China hopes that countries concerned will pay close attention to the just voice of the international community, strictly abide by the Treaty and abandon the missile defense system as early as possible.

The resolution, proposed by Belarus, China, Russia and Kyrgyzstan, was approved by an overwhelming majority of votes, with 78 in favor and 3 against, according to the spokesman.

China, as one of the proposers of the resolution, is thankful to those countries that voted in favor of it, Zhu said.
