Taiwan-funded Industries See Rapid Upgrading in Mainland

Taiwanese industries in the mainland have tended to be upgraded rapidly in recent years as more Taiwanese businessmen came to the mainland to build factories.

According to Taiwanese economists' analysis, earlier, most of the industries set up by Taiwan businessmen in the mainland were traditional industries of low technology and limited added value, such as shoe-making, tailoring, toys and plastic cement. In the early 90s, the Island's electronic industry gradually shifted the production of some parts and components, such as keyboard, mouse and chassis of low technology, to the mainland. Later, the IT products of higher level such as monitor, main-board and desk-computers were shifted to, and being produced rapidly in, the mainland. Of late, the industry of notebook PC, which the Taiwanese are proud of, has worked out one investment plan after another against the Taiwan authorities' prohibition of investment in the mainland

It's this irresistible trend of Taiwanese businessmen investing in the mainland that even the TFT-LCD industry which emerged in Taiwan only two years ago and the digital camera industry of three years old have come to the mainland following the trend.

Under such circumstances, the Taiwanese authorities should make necessary policy readjustments, discard their ostrich policy on cross-Strait economic relations and trade, do more things beneficial, instead of harms, to enterprises.
