Beijing High Pressure Science Center established

China's leading research organization announced Wednesday it has set up the Beijing High Pressure Science Center in a bid to step up research in this newly-emerging science.

Bai Chunli, vice-president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), said that high pressure science is widely regarded by scientists around the world and it is vital in a number of scientific research areas, including physics, chemistry, material sciences and biology.

He said that high pressure science has been given priority in research in many countries as it will have great impacts on a number of industries and research, including the environment, medicine, agriculture and natural resources exploitation.

Experts specializing in high pressure science have turned black lead into artificial diamond under high pressure and temperature, which marks the importance of the science.

Officials with the Ministry of Science and Technology said Wednesday that the ministry plans to increase investment in this field, and help the CAS to build the center into one of the most influential high pressure science research centers in the world.
