Tibet Maps Out 12-Percent Economic Growth
The economic growth rate of Tibet is expected to exceed 12 percent in the 2001-2005 period, according to an initial economic plan released Wednesday.
Tibet vows to become one of the advanced provinces and autonomous regions in western China in terms of per capita gross domestic product by 2005. Tibet's GDP will catch up with the nation's average rate by 2010, according to the long-term plan for economic development in China's Tenth Five-Year Plan period (2001-2005), which was approved by the regional committee of the Communist Party of China Wednesday.
Other key tasks to be accomplished in the upcoming five years include improvement of economic structures, acceleration of infrastructure construction, establishment of a modern enterprise system, environmental protection and the development of small towns.
The past five years witnessed the fastest economic growth in Tibet with the growth rate maintaining at 12.9 percent for six consecutive years. The region's GDP topped 10 billion yuan.
