Inner Mongolia Uses "Test Tube Embryo" Technology to Rear Fine Breed CattleOver the past two years the Xuri Biotech Company in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has used the "test tube embryo" technology to develop fine cattle breeds.Xu Rigan, the president of Inner Mongolia University and academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering, set up the company to develop improved cattle breeds in April 1998. The company has established breeding centers for "test tube embryo" cattle in Australia and Canada. The centers produce large amounts of test tube embryos for use in China by using resources of fine breeds in the developed countries. So far, the Xuri Company has already set up embryo transplanting centers in Hohhot, Baotou, Chifeng and Dalian. The improved breeds of cattle developed by the Xuri Company can increase beef output substantially. A local scalper has to be raised for four to five years before producing 200 to 300 kilograms of beef, whereas a fine breed cattle raised for two years with test tube embryo technology can produce 700 to 800 kilograms of beef. In order to transfer the hi-tech result into economical efficiency, Xuri Company tried hard to expand the embryo transplanting team. So far, the company has sponsored five training courses on embryo transplanting in which experts from Australia and Japan gave lectures. Attending were more than 100 trainees from Inner Mongolia, the Xingjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, and Hebeim Liaoning and Sichuan provinces. |
