President Jiang Condoles on Air Crash Victims

Chinese President Jiang Zemin on Wednesday sent a message of condolences to his Singaporean counterpart, S.R. Nathan, on the crash of a Singapore Airline (SIA) passenger plane late Tuesday.

"On behalf of the Chinese government and people, I express profound condolence to you, and through you, to the bereaved family members and those who were injured," he said.

A B747-400 of the SIA heading from Taipei to Los Angels with 159 passengers and 20 crew on board crashed on the runway during the takeoff run at Taoyuan Airport near Taipei, capital of China's Taiwan province, at 23:18 hours local time (1538 GMT) Tuesday.

The SIA said the death toll has increased to 79.
