Uganda Red Cross Calls for Help on Curbing Ebola

As Ebola cases rose to 239 with 75 deaths recorded in Gulu district in northern Uganda, Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) has launched a public appeal to raise 194 million Uganda shillings (about 110,000 U.S. dollars) to help contain the epidemic, the Monitor daily reported on Wednesday.

"The Red Cross urgently needs funds or assistance, for protective clothing, volunteer support and training, tents, tarpaulins, gumboots, printing of leaflets and posters and fuel for transporting volunteers," URCS Secretary General Rober Kwesiga was quoted as saying.

According to Kwesiga, the URCS has opened an Ebola account in Standard Chartered Bank for well-wishers to help with money.

So far, China Red Cross Scoiety has deposited 30,000 dollars on the account, while the Spanish Red Cross has pledged 25,000 dollars. The British Red Cross is giving Uganda protective materials and the Danish Red Cross has provided an Ebola specialist Rasak Askadiri to train and mobilize volunteers, URCS said.
