Macao to Host Grand Prix Auto Race in Mid-NovemberMacao will host the Grand Prix auto races in the middle of November this year, sources with the races' organizing committee said at a press conference Tuesday. The Macao Grand Prix was started in 1954 as an amateur event for local motoring enthusiasts. Now it has become an annual racing gala which attracts the world's leading riders and drivers. The 6.2-km urban street route, which is narrow, curvy and undulant, makes the races rather breathtaking. The highlight of the racing events is the Macao Formula 3 Grand Prix. Up to now, 30 drivers from 15 countries and territories have applied to compete. The F-3 event was launched in 1983 and late Ayrton Senna's victory put the territory firmly on the world-wide motor racing calendar. For two-wheel fans, the Macao Motorcycle Grand Prix has always been a memorable event. The 2000 entry list includes 26 drivers from countries such as Britain, the United States, Austria, France, Switzerland and Germany. Another major event is the Guia car race. The organizing committee has registered 63 entries, only 32 drivers are qualified to participate. The Grand Prix also includes several other events supported by various sponsors. Practicing and qualifying races will be held on November 16 and 17, and the most exciting competitions will fall on November 18 and 19. |
