China Preparing for Massive Water Diversion Project
China is actively preparing for an ambitious project to divert water from the flood-prone Yangtze River and its tributaries to the drought-vulnerable north, according to the Ministry of Water Resources Tuesday.
In the project, water will be diverted from three places along the upper, middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, sources from the ministry said.
Beijing, the national capital, and the northern port city of Tianjin are expected to benefit from the project.
China started the feasibility study of the project in the 1950s and experts said that the diversion of water from the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze is practical with today's technologies, which will greatly relieve the water shortage in northern China.
