Polluting Enterprises in Hainan Forced to Suspend ProductionTwenty-nine major polluting enterprises in south China's Hainan Province were recently told to suspend production and take measures to control the emission of pollution. The move is in an effort to ensure that all polluting enterprises in the island province meet pollution standards by December 15, said a local official. Hainan wishes to achieve an ecological balance and has issued a circular on the streamlining and reorganizing of small iron and steel plants. To improve pollution levels, the provincial government in late August asked local governments at lower levels to urge enterprises in their respective localities to take action in relieving pollution within given period of time. Within two months, only 72.5 percent of the province's 167 main polluting enterprises had met pollution standards, the remainder were either unwilling to make investments in controlling pollution or were slow to react. The official added that all polluting enterprises that have failed to meet the standards for treatment of pollution by December 15 will be permanently shut down.
