China Develops Advanced GIS Software Development Platform

China has developed an advanced software development platform for the geographic information system (GIS), which can be used in such areas as urban planning, land management, environmental protection and agriculture as well as in the military.

The platform, known as SuperMap 2000, was developed by the Center for GIS Industry Development under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Beijing-based SuperMap GIS Technologies Co.

Zhong Ershun, director of the center, said Monday that the platform is capable of processing, analyzing, searching and displaying information collected through space technology. It is also able to edit, produce and browse digital maps with or without a three-dimensional effect.

He said the platform could be used to build a large information system as it supports a large-scale database.

"SuperMap 2000" is an open system that could be used to develop professional software products with intellectual property rights, or could be used in other information systems providing geographic information," Zhong said at a seminar on GIS Innovation and Commercialization.

He said the platform has been used to develop China's Civil Aviation Flight Information System, Zhongshan Municipal Land Information System, Comprehensive Hong Kong GIS System and Comprehensive Macao GIS System for the Chinese troops stationed in Hong Kong and Macao.

In the next five years, the GIS software market for land management in China has been valued at several billion yuan, experts said in Beijing Monday.
