Conference of Promoting Healthy Sex Lives Held in NanjingThe quality of many Chinese couple's sex lives needs to be improved with more knowledge about sex and the use of certain medicines. That is according to sex experts at a conference to promote healthy sex lives, held over the weekend in Nanjing, the capital of East China's Jiangsu Province. Over a dozen experts from across the country gathered to discuss how to prevent and cure male sexual diseases and improve people's sex lives. According to statistics, more than 50 per cent of Chinese men aged over 40 suffer from some kind of sexual problem. These include sterility, impotence, premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction which can have serious effects on men's lives and even threaten marriages. But very few of the men ever seek medical assistance because of the traditional idea in China that sex is "dirty" and should not be discussed in public. "To redress this, the most important thing now is to teach people more about sex and help them understand that it is actually 'clean' and necessary for a good marriage," said sex expert Shi Chengli. At the conference, held for the first Men's Health Day designated by the State Family Planning Commission, experts offered free advice to hundreds of people with sexual problems. Meanwhile, representatives from more than 40 sex health product manufacturing firms met to discuss ways of counteracting the impact of foreign sex medicines on the Chinese market. Viagra, which got approval to enter China in July and has been well received here, has put domestic producers under great pressure. It has made them determined to join hands to keep their share of the market. "The challenge is already there and our task now is to forge closer ties and co-operate more in order to produce higher quality medicines and be more competitive," said a representative from one manufacturing firm.
