State Councilor Calls for Accelerated Logistics DevelopmentState Councilor Wu Yi Sunday urged Chinese companies to learn from developed countries to promote the development of modern logistics and e-commerce in China.Wu made the remarks in a letter to congratulate the convening of The Year 2000 International Symposium on Modern Logistics and E-Commerce. The central authorities have decided that logistics and distribution will be a priority in the service industry for the country's 10th five-year plan period between 2001 and 2005, the state councilor said. The symposium," jointly sponsored by the State Administration of Internal Trade and the United Nations Development Program, was inaugurated here today. In her letter to the symposium, Wu said to accelerate the development of modern logistics in China will help enhance the competitiveness of companies, optimize the allocation of resources and improve the performance of the national economy. It will also help realize the two fundamental transformations in China's economic structure and economic growth mode, and promote the sustainable and healthy growth of the Chinese economy, she added. Industry sources noted that Wu's call came at a time when China is expected to join the World Trade Organization and will further open its service trade sector. A well developed e-commerce sector will help streamline the logistics and distribution sector, they said. Currently, some big-name multinational logistics and distribution companies are operating in China and some Chinese companies have joined their operations. Experts believe that China's enormous market will provide more opportunities for domestic and foreign logistics and distribution enterprises in the near future. |
