2 Israeli Security Guards Injured by Gunman

Two Israeli security guards were seriously injured Monday when an unidentified gunman opened fire at the Israel National Insurance Office in East Jerusalem, Israel police said.

The gunman had fled the scene after the shooting at close range at the office in Al-Asfahani Street in East Jerusalem.

The pair wounded in the head had been rushed to Hadassah Hospital in West Jerusalem for treatment and doctors said they were in critical conditions.

Israeli police have launched a manhunt for the gunman. Investigation into the accident is underway and Israeli police said that it was apparently a Palestinian terrorist attack.

The shooting incident has been regarded as a serious one in East Jerusalem as Israel has tightened its security there since the outbreak of the Israeli-Palestinian bloody clashes on September 28.

Hundreds of Israeli police and undercover police are scattered at various locations in East Jerusalem to maintain security there.

Israel also barred thousands of Palestinians from the West Bank and Israeli Arabs living in Israel from performing prayers each Friday at Al Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem, for fear of outbreak of anti-Israeli demonstrations.

The incident took place in the backdrop of raging Palestinian-Israeli conflicts, which have left over 130 people dead, mostly Palestinians, and more than 5,000 others injured since their outbreak on September 28.
