Population, Environment Contest Draws 1.3 Million Chinese

A nationwide contest on population, resources and environment, participated by more than 1.32 million Chinese, ended in China.

A ceremony was held today in Beijing for the 360 winners of the contest, which was jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Land and Natural Recourses, the State Family Planning Commission and the State Environmental Protection Administration.

The contest has drawn wide attention since it began on July 21. The organizing committee of the contest received more than 1.32 million answered questionnaires from 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities across the country.

Yang Kuifu, vice-minister of the State Family Planning Commission said at the ceremony that population, resources and environment are the key to the sustainable development of China's economy and society.

Family planning, resources management and environmental protection are of great importance to each person, each family and the whole country, said Yang, adding that diversified methods should be adopted to foster a scientific concept of birth, living and production among Chinese citizens.
