Yellow River Hydropower Station Operates Safely for 13 YearsThe Longyang Gorge Hydropower Station on the upper reaches of the Yellow River, the second longest river in China, has been operating safely for 13 years, sources said. The project recently passed a technical examination by Chinese power experts. The hydropower station, located in northwest China's Qinghai province, is one of the 25 hydropower stations China has planned to build on the section between Longyang Gorge and Qingtong Gorge of the Yellow River. Construction of the project started in 1976, and the first generating unit went into operation in 1987. The project was finally completed in 1993. Sources from Qinghai Provincial Bureau for Power Industry said that in the past 13 years, the project survived three high water levels, three seismological periods and two earthquakes measuring 4 to 5.5 degrees on the Richter Scale. Longyang Gorge Hydropower Station has a 178-meter-tall dyke and a storage capacity of 24.7 billion cubic meters. With an installed capacity of 1.28 million kilowatts. The station can generate 6.07 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity and an output value of 250 million yuan annually.
