Scientists Locate Chromosome Related to Liver Cancer
Joint research by Chinese and American scientists revealed that the transfer of liver cancer cells is closely related to the absence of the short arm of the eighth chromosome.
After comparing the original cancer cells with the transferred cells through comparative gene hybridization (CGH), scientists from the China Fudan University, Hong Kong University and the U.S.National Institute of Health found that significantly more transferred cells are absent of the short arm of the eighth chromosome than original cells.
"This result shows that the short arm of the eighth chromosome gene is capable of curbing the transfer of liver cancer cells," said Professor Qin Lunxiu with Fudan University.
The latest research results have been published in the Cancer Research magazine.
Liver cancer is second only to lung cancer in the number of deaths in China. Surgical operations are normally used to treat liver cancer. However, 50 percent of patients undergoing surgery are likely to have a relapse within five years.
