Chinese Women Outrace South Koreans in World Cup Short Track

Skater nips gold
The Chinese women skaters took two of three titles at stake to outrace their chief South Korean rivals in the last-day finals of the second leg ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup on Sunday in Provo, Salt Lake City.

Thus, China accumulated three golds, three silvers and one bronze, against South Korea's two golds, two silvers and two bronzes in the women's 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 3000m and 3000m relay finals.

However, South Korean men skaters concluded the tournament by winning two golds today in the 1000m and 5000m relay, while American Apollo Anton Ohno won his second gold medal in the 3000m individual final.

Li Jiajun, who won the 1500m on Friday, had another two silver medals from the 1000m and 3000m apart his early second place finish in the 500m final yesterday.

The women's 1000m finals were contested between China and South Korea with each occupying two berths, wherein four-time world champion Yang Yang (A) outraced budding Korean star Park Hye-Rim for the top honor in 1:34.055, with Park taking the silver in 1:34.095 and her teammate Joo Min-Jin finishing third in 1:34.377, beating Yang Yang (S) of China to fourth in 1:34.428.

However, Park Hye-Rim eventually capitalized from the cross-tracking of Evgenia Radanova of Bulgaria to take the women's 3000m honor from China's Yang Yang (A) who was still leading in the last six meters before being bumped to the protective walls.

While Radanova was injured and disqualified, the 17-year-old Park came over for her winning time of 5:55.920, beating Yang Yang (S) to second in 5:55.929, with the bronze medal gone to another Korean Joo Min-Jin in 5:55.968, and Sun Dandan of China finished in fourth in 5:56.452.

The Chinese women skaters finally had their revenge by beating their South Korean peers to take the women's 3000m relay title in 4:19.409, against the Koreans' 4:19.859, good enough only for the silver, with Italy taking home the bronze medal.

The men's competitions awarded two gold medals for South Korea as Kim Dong-Sung triumphed in the 1000m in 1:27.727, and paced his teammates to take the 5000m relay title in 6:59.778.

Apollo Anton Ohno of the United States who early won the 500m title, triumphed twice by taking home the 3000m in 5:25.132.

However, the men's overall title in the second leg went to Li Jiajun of China as he has won one gold medals with three silvers.
