Chinese Sentenced for Pirating Textbooks

A Chinese man was recently sentenced to three years in prison and a fine of 80,000 yuan for pirating textbooks.

Zheng Hua, a man from Putian, a city in east China's Fujian Province, was sentenced by a local court for infringing the copyrights of six publishing houses.

Zheng was found to have illegally published more than 310,000 volumes of textbooks worth some 1.57 million yuan from 1998 to 1999.

He also sold 130,000 volumes of pirated books worth more than 650,000 yuan.

A source with the Fujian Provincial Press and Publication Bureau said Fujian has stepped up efforts to crack down on textbook piracies this year because such textbooks might have a negative impact on students.
