China Launches Publicity Campaign for CensusVarious activities were conducted throughout China Saturday to publicize the nation's 5th census, which will fall on November 1 this year.In Beijing, some 40,000 census workers took to the streets and to give out millions of pamphlets and other materials to pedestrian's to inform and to explain the importance of the census. Various art performances were also held in downtown and suburban areas for the campaign. Posters, slogans and consultation desks were set up in Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, attracting the attention of thousands of passersby's. A city official said that Harbin will spend more than 6.5 million yuan for the coming census. The Yutuo Street in Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, was decorated with colorful flags, where census workers distributed pamphlets and provided consultations about the census to passersby's. All the pamphlets were written in both Chinese and Tibetan languages. Zhu Zhixin, deputy head of the leading group of the 5th census under the State Council, said in Beijing that the census will provide not only key information on China's population but also an accurate basis for the sustained development of the country in the 21st century.
