Jiang Zemin Meets Former German President

President Jiang Zemin met with former German President Richard von Weizsacker in Zhongnanhai, site of the central government, in Beijing Saturday morning, and emphasized China's relations with Germany.

Cooperation between China and Germany has maintained sound development momentum in all fields, Jiang said, expressing the hope bilateral ties would realize a long-term, stable, and overall progress in the new century.

He also believed that the frequent contacts between leaders of both countries in recent years have deepened mutual understanding and stimulated friendship.

The President also pointed out China and the Europe should reinforce coordination under the present situation when the world multi-polarization and economic globalization are speeding up.

China supports the European integration and believes that the development of the EU is conducive to the peace and development of the region and the even the world as a whole.

Jiang also briefed Weizsacker on China's position on the WTO accession and its efforts to this end.

Weizsacker said Germany also attaches great importance to relations with China and is willing to expand bilateral cooperation in all sectors. The German business circle expects China's early entry into the WTO, he said.

The former president is here to attend the Village Forum jointly hosted by the German Korber Fund and the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs.
