Vice-President Hu Jintao on Taiwan Issue
Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao said Saturday that China may adopt more flexible policies in resolving the Taiwan issue compared with those for taking back Hong Kong and Macao, but it will not allow anybody to split Taiwan from China in the name of anything.
China has always stuck with the basic principle of "peaceful reunification" and "one country, two systems" and will do its best to resolve the issue through peaceful means, said Hu when meeting with Chinese women from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and abroad, attending the Second Cross-Straits Symposium on the Development of Women, which opened Saturday in Beijing.
"We can sit down and discuss any issue as long as the Taiwan authorities recognize the One-China Principle," Hu added.
Hu said that remarkable progress has been made in economic, personnel and other exchanges across the Taiwan Straits in recent years.
This has not only increased mutual understanding between the compatriots on both sides of the Straits but has also brought about actual benefits to them, Hu said.
Hu expressed the hope that all women from both the mainland and Taiwan join hands to contribute to the earlier reunification of the nation.
Vice-Premier Qian Qichen, Vice Chairwoman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee He Luli, and Honorary President of the All China Women's Federation Chen Muhua were also at the meeting.
