Men's Health: Focus of Shanghai Today

The health of men, who are usually considered stronger than women, has become the focus of attention Saturday in China's leading industrial and commercial city, Shanghai.

Lectures, consultations, exhibitions, medical examinations and various other activities were staged in more than 300 districts and communities in the city to promote care for men's health, which has long been neglected.

As part of a national campaign to mark the first Men's Health Day, on October 28, the city has also established a telephone hotline for men to talk about their health problems.

A popular science book, titled "On Men's Reproductive Health", has been published and 120,000 copies have already been handed out.

A recent survey shows that various male sexual problems like sterility and prostate hyperplasia have been increasing at a rate of 15 percent among Chinese men in recent years.

Impotence and andrology diseases are growing among men due to increasing stress from work and family, and men's reluctance to see a doctor.

Worsening environmental pollution is also seen as a major reason for the increase.

Experts estimate that about 20 to 30 percent of adult men in China suffer from such problems.
