Sino-overseas Telecom Operators to Jointly Construct Submarine Optical Cable

China Telecom and six other major telecommunication operators from overseas signed a memorandum of understanding in Beijing Friday to jointly construct an Asia-America submarine optical cable.

The optical cable, to be ready for operation in 2002, will link five countries and regions in Asia and America.

The companies to take part in the construction are Chung Hua Telecom in China's Taiwan region, Korea Telecom, Japan Telecom, Japan's NTT, and two other companies in the US.

The cable will feature advanced dense wavelength division multiplex technology (DWDM) with a total capacity of 5.12 tb/s, and eight pairs of self-healing-ring systems, which will ensure high reliability.

Zhang Chunjiang, Vice-Minister for the Information Industry, noted that the construction of the cable will improve China's Telecom's service and enhance its international competitiveness.
