Provincial Broadband Network to Reach 2.5G by Yearend

Networks of provincial capital cities across China will be connected via 2.5G broadband optical fibers by this yearend, revealed by Leng Rongquan, Vice-President of China Telecom, at the signing ceremony of Beijing Telecom and Intel on October 25.

The expansion project will be completed by the end of this year with high-speed routers and optical facilities all in place currently. The capacity of backbone networks linking provincial capital cities and major cities in East China will be upgraded to 2.5G from existing 155M and this is predicted to be finished in the first half of the next year. As a consequence, speed of backbone networks nationwide will increase by 8 to 10 folds.

City-to-city networks are also to be built up. For instance, the capacity of Guangzhou's network has reached 5G and the band between Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou has been expanded to 2.5G.

Meanwhile, the capacity of China Telecom's international exit will be upgrade 2 to 3 times over current 1.2G. China Telecom will develop various services like ISDN and ISDL to facilitate customers' surfing on the Internet.
