Japan to Help China Develop Terrestrial Heat in TibetJapan will help China develop terrestrial heat, which originates from underground, in Yangbajain in the Tibet Autonomous Region.Under an agreement recently signed in Lhasa, capital of the region, the Japanese government will provide 400 million yen and China will offer matching funds for the project. The money will be used to further investigate geological structures in areas north of the Yangbajain thermoelectric station, hoping to find hot springs in the depths of the earth. Yangbajain station has an installed capacity of 25,000 kilowatts, and 30 percent of the electricity supply for Lhasa comes from the station. Yangbajain, some 90 kilometers northwest of Lhasa, is the world 's largest power station powered by terrestrial heat. Currently, heat comes from an underground layer less than 200 meters deep, where water temperature is around 150 degrees Centigrade.
