Gathering to Commemorate Chinese People's Volunteers in Korea War

A grand gathering was held Wednesday in the Great Hall of the People to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the dispatching of the Chinese People's Volunteers (CPV) to Korea to fight against US aggressors and aid Korea.

The gathering was presided over by Vice-President Hu Jintao, with Chinese President Jiang Zemin delivering a speech.

Jiang urged all the members of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Chinese servicemen and the Chinese people to learn and carry out the spirits of patriotism and revolutionary heroism displayed by CPV, and to devote more efforts to build socialism with Chinese characteristics.

"The victory in the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea was a great victory for the world's peace-loving people, a heroic feat to defend justice and fight against hegemonies, a splendid epic of patriotism and revolutionary heroism, and a grand monument erected by the Chinese people in maintaining world peace and human progress," said Jiang, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC).

During the speech, Jiang called for a silent tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed themselves in the war.

In his address, Jiang praised the Korean people for their struggle against the enemy under the leadership of Kim II Song and the Workers' Party of Korea and said that the two peoples and the two armies of China and Korea have forged a great friendship.

The gathering was attended by 6,000 people from various sectors, including representatives of CPV veterans and families members of the martyrs.

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Premier Zhu Rongji, and chairman Li Ruihuan of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, were also present at the gathering.
