Top Awards for Young Social Scientists Granted

The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) Thrusday presented top awards to five young social scientists in China.

The scholars received the Hu Sheng Award for Young Social Scientists with 30,000 yuan (3,600 U.S. dollars) for each.

The award winners are Lu Guolong for his book on Philosophy of Daoism, Sichinbat for his works of Jangar and Mongolian Religion, Yan Lixian for her work involving Early Industrialization and Domestic Markets in China and Japan, Xu Lianggao with Origins of Chinese Ethnic Cultures, and Zhang Yongquan with Study on Dunhuang Documents.

For the first time the organizing committee of the awards adopted the procedure as selection procedure for the Nobel Prize, selecting award winners from applicants recommended by authoritative scholars and experts, said Jiang Lansheng, vice president of the CASS.

The five prize winners are between 34 and 44 years of age. Jiang said the CASS will further better the appraisal mechanism for the awards, which are targeted the highest ones for young social scientists in China.

Hu Sheng, former vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and former CASS president, suggested the awards and he took lead to donate for the funds.
