People's Daily Online to kick off new domain name
The People's Daily Online announced on October 26 in Beijing that it will start to use the new domain name people.com.cn on October 28 while still keeping its current name peopledaily.com.cn. in use.
The People's Daily, a national leading newspaper, is the official publication of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. The People's Daily Online Edition sets up a platform for the newspaper to release news on the Internet. Backed by the People's Daily's authoritative position and editorial voice, formed over a long period, the Online Edition has already established itself as a nationwide comprehensive and influential news platform, serving as a window for Chinese and world readers to better understand China.
Since the People's Daily Online was officially launched on January 1, 1997, it has by its news releasing far exceeded its parent newspaper. The People's Daily Online not only includes news releasing from 11 newspapers and 6 magazines published by the People's Daily, but also relies on the over 70 bureaus at home and abroad to provide minutely updates. "With the rapid development of information infrastructure and Internet technologies in China, the Internet will penetrate into all walks of people's life. To well prepare the People's Daily group for the information revolution, broaden its brand name and serve a fast-growing number of Internet users, we adopt the new domain name. At the same time, we will improve the quality of our news, information, community and other services" says Wu Hengquan, deputy editor-in-chief of the People's Daily and director of its Net Center.
"www.people.com.cn" has been formerly registered by the China International Network Co (CINet), a well-known Information Service Provider in China. Thanks to their joint efforts, the People's Daily smoohtly takes over the domain from the CINet.
