Chinese Vice-President Meets Azerbaijan Foreign Minister

Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao, in a meeting Wednesday with Azerbaijan Foreign Minister Vilayat Guliyev, said that China is willing to work with Azerbaijan to boost bilateral relations on the basis of the Five-Principles of Peaceful Co-existence.

Hu said that bilateral relations have been developing steadily since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1992, and leaders of the two countries have had frequent exchanges of visits. He also noted that areas of cooperation have expanded and that bilateral cooperation has yielded results.

China appreciates and thanks Azerbaijan for its placing great importance on developing relations with China and consistently respecting and supporting the Chinese government's stance on the Taiwan issue, Hu said.

China respects Azerbaijan's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and respects the Azerbaijan people's choice for the development path according to its national conditions, he added.

Hu also briefed Guliyev on China's situation and its views on the international situation.

Guliyev said that despite the long distance between the two countries, their peoples have a traditional friendship, and although Azerbaijan is a small country, it can develop friendship and cooperation with China based on equality and mutual benefit, adding that Azerbaijan is satisfied with that.

He said that the Azerbaijan people have a friendly sentiment towards the Chinese people, and Azerbaijan attaches great importance to developing relations with China, and is fully prepared to bolster bilateral cooperation.

Azerbaijan will continue to cooperate with China in safeguarding national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, Guliyev added.
