Passenger arrivals in China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) by means of marine, land and air routes exceeded 6.84 million from January to September this year, an increase of 24.1 percent over the same period of last year.

Of the passengers, those from China's Hong Kong SAR, inland areas and Taiwan and the Republic of Korea showed a high growth rate, according to a press release issued Wednesday by the Statistics and Census Services of the Macao SAR government.

In September alone, the number of arrivals was more than 725,000, an increase of 36.2 percent over a year ago. Those from the Hong Kong SAR and the inland areas of China accounted for 53.7 percent and 22.9 percent respectively.

Local tourism officials expect that this year 8 million tourists may come to Macao, which has a population of about 430,000.
