Finnish President Meets Chinese Party Official

Finnish President Tarja Halonen met Tuesday with Wei Jianxing, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in Helsinki.

Both sides praised the smooth development of bilateral ties since 1950 when China and Finland established diplomatic relations, and expressed hope for enhancing bilateral cooperation and ties in the new century.

Wei, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said that China appreciated Halonen's contribution to promoting Sino-Finnish relations.

He noted frequent exchanges of high-level visits and increased cooperation in every field from political to economic and cultural between the two countries in recent years.

"We're confident about the prospect of Sino-Finnish relations," said Wei, who is also a member of the CPC Central Committee Secretariat.

Wei, who arrived here Monday for a goodwill visit, also briefed Halonen on China's domestic situation and the Chinese government's plan to develop western China.
