Jiang Stresses Sino-US Mutual Understanding

President Jiang Zemin said Tuesday that the major task for both China and the United States is to enhance mutual understanding between the two countries and the two peoples.

Jiang made the remark while meeting with former US Vice President Walter Mondale.

Jiang said that despite certain wind and rain, Sino-US relations on the whole have been progressing steadily. He said the settlement of the US Permanent Normal Trade Relations to China recently is in the fundamental interest of the two peoples and conducive to Sino-US economic and trade cooperation and the healthy development of bilateral ties.

Facing the new millennium, Jiang said, Sino-US relationship is also at an important juncture of breaking new ground for the future. He urged the governments and leaders of both countries, as well as all political figures of insight, to take a firm hold of the overall development of bilateral relations, expand exchanges, strengthen cooperation and properly handle differences on the basis of the three Sino-US joint communiques.

Jiang also expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by Mondale to push forward Sino-US ties.

Mondale told Jiang he was still proud of achieving normalization of US-China ties when he severed as vice president in the Carter Administration. He considered the "unique cooperative relations" between American and Chinese leadership as beneficial to bilateral ties. He said he was impressed by the changes that have taken place in China and believes his country should understand China more.

Mondale was here as guest of Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs.
