China to Build Asia's Largest Packinghouse

China is to build Asia's largest packinghouse in the northern port city of Tianjin to provide pork for consumers worldwide.

Local sources said that the factory will slaughter 1.8 million pigs a year and export pork to Europe, Southeast Asian countries and Japan.

Established by the Tianjin Shunli Industrial Corporation, a private company, the factory will involve an investment of 248 million yuan (30 million U.S. dollars) and install equipment imported from Germany's Banss company.

The factory's sanitary and production conditions all meet the standards set by the European Community and American agricultural department, local official sources said.

The packinghouse will also provide pork for domestic consumers.
