Disafforestation Cases Disclosed in Guangdong

Forestry bureau of south China's Guangdong Province disclosed two disafforestation cases and arrested related hewers recently.

According to an official with the bureau, the province initiated a five-month forest-protection drive in August. So far, a total of eight similar cases were reported.

In Shima Village, in the suburbs of Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong, 6,000 trees were cut down, accounting for one-third of the total in the village's afforested zone.

In Ruyuan County, about 100 mu (about 6.7 hectares) of afforestation area was destroyed to give way to a private mining project.

With booming mining and breeding industries in recent years, disafforestation cases have increased in the province, the official said.

To better carry out process of protecting the forest, the province will continue its efforts to crack down on deforestation activities in the next two months.
