Kuwait Welcomes Outcome of Arab Summit

Kuwait on Monday welcomed the decisions made at the just-concluded emergency Arab summit during which Arab leaders asserted political and financial support to the Palestinians in their struggle against the Israelis.

During a cabinet weekly session, Kuwaiti Acting Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who attended the summit representing Emir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, briefed the ministers on the outcome of the meeting held in Cairo.

"The ministers welcomed the decisions that are aimed at supporting the Palestinian people in their just cause and their rights to declare their independent state," the official Kuwait News Agency reported.

They also hailed the initiative by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in calling for such a gathering and underlined the importance of such meetings in supporting Arab solidarity and advancing Arab causes, the news agency said.

At the conclusion of their two-day meeting on Sunday, Arab leaders decided to set up two funds worth of 1 billion U.S. dollars to extend material support to the Palestinians.

They also agreed to halt further normalization with Israel and stay away from multinational talks on regional economic cooperation.

But the meeting stopped short of making an outright call for cutting ties with Israel, despite some Arab leaders and ordinary Arabs appealed for tougher actions against the Jewish state.
