Chinese Doctors Clear Blood Clot with Unique Equipment
Chinese doctors successfully prevented a patient's leg from being amputated by pulverizing a blood clot in his femoral artery with a mini-triturator.
The 67-year-old patient surnamed Yang was suffering from a 30 centimeter long blood clot, which had gradually formed in the femoral artery of his left leg.
Doctors in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province found that Yang's painful leg was cold and one of his toes was dead due to the lack of blood flow. Yang would have to has his leg amputated if he had not had immediate treatment.
The doctors from Heilongjiang Provincial Hospital penetrated into the femoral artery with a catheter installed with a mini-triturator inside.
The blood clot, which was as thick as glue, was crushed into particles by the mini-triturator. The particles were later absorbed by the human body.
The operation did not hurt the blood vessel and Yang no longer felt pain after the operation as blood circulation resumed. Yang's leg regained temperature and his skin turned reddish.
The operation was the first of its kind ever successfully performed in China.
