China Urges US to Honor One-China Principle

China Tuesday urged the United States to abide by the one-China principle, the three joint communiques, and its promise of not supporting Taiwan to join any international organization where statehood is required.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao made the remarks in reply to a question on the US congressional passage of a bill that supports Taiwan to participate in the United Nations.

He said that China urged the US to clearly oppose such a bill and take concrete measures to prevent its Congress from interfering in China's internal affairs by the Taiwan issue, adding that China also urged the US Congress to stop any erroneous acts of using the Taiwan issue to damage China's rights and interests.

He said that the US congress, regardless of China's firm opposition, passed such a bill that supports Taiwan to participate in the United Nations and other international organizations, seriously encroaching upon China's sovereignty and grossly interfering in China's internal affairs.

China has lodged solemn representations to the US for the matter, Zhu said, reiterating that there is only one China in the world, and that Taiwan, as a part of it, is ineligible to join any international organization where statehood is required.
