Vietnam Seeks Opportunities in Chinese Market for Marine Products

Vietnam's marine industry is seeking the potentially lucrative export opportunities in the booming Chinese seafood market, local daily Vietnam News (VNS) reported Tuesday.

China ranks it along side the most important export markets of Vietnam such as Japan, the United States and the European Union, said VNS, adding that the Chinese market is particularly attractive thanks to its large appetite and lower transport costs.

Over the last nine months, Vietnam exported 18,900 tons of marine products to China, worth 57.13 million US dollars. This was a modest share of the country's total marine export revenue, which reached one billion dollars.

However, the real figure is likely to be much higher, because a large volume of marine products is traded across the border and is not counted in the statistics. This form of trading has developed strongly since the two countries signed a bilateral agreement on border trade last year.

Most Vietnamese marine products are exported to China in the form of raw and semi-processed products.
