Ningxia Pours Massive Funds into Green Project

Northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region will pour 28 million yuan into a three-year afforestation program aimed at turning the bank areas of the Yellow River green.

The funds granted for the plan will be used during the 2001-2003 period, said a local afforestation official.

According to the official, a total of 17,000 hectares of trees will be planted along the 397 km section of the river in the region.

At present, only 14.6 percent of the 380,000 mu (25,400 hectares) bank areas in Ningxia are covered by trees.

The project will increase the afforestation area to 320,000 mu (21,300 hectares) in 2003, the official said, adding that it will also help the region to better protect river dam and farming fields during flooding time.
