New Concepts Vital to China's Western Development

New concepts are vital to the development of western China -- this was a key topic among domestic and foreign economists and entrepreneurs at the 2000 Western Forum of China.

Forum participants held that people in western China should emancipate their minds, absorb new ideas, management expertise and an innovative spirit from both eastern China and abroad.

Experts noted that the concept of coordinated development between economy and environmental improvement has taken root in people's heart.

People have broken away from ideas of local protectionism, satisfaction with the existing state and reluctance to move forward.

Participants of conferences of all sorts organized by the forum agreed that the concepts of innovation, venture investment, capital operation and other advanced experience summed up in the development of eastern China should be introduced in the course of developing western China.

Experts from Guangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shandong and other eastern provinces have an identical view that eastern and western China experienced different global situation, economic system and mode of growth in their respective initial periods of development.

The scheme of developing western China was launched in a new period characterized by the knowledge economy and globalization. Economic mergers and open policies have become the inevitable world trend.

Hu Angang, a celebrated Chinese economist, said the traditional development pattern of concentrating on natural resource exploitation has received grave challenge. Investment in education and science and technology will yield bigger returns.

The Western Forum of China provides a good chance for people in western China to know the world and gain new concepts and ideas, he said.
